FLAC to MP3

Pick your .flac files and get MP3 copies that fit on a phone, a USB stick or an older player. FLAC to MP3 conversion runs locally in your browser, so a whole album goes through without waiting on an upload.

How it works

  1. 1.Add FLAC files

Up to 15 tracks per batch and 200 MB per track on a computer.

  2. 2.Choose the bitrate

320 kbps keeps the most detail; 192 kbps saves space and still sounds good to most listeners.

  3. 3.Convert

This FLAC to MP3 converter decodes each track and encodes it with LAME, the standard MP3 encoder, right in your tab.

  4. 4.Download the MP3s

Save them one by one or as a single ZIP archive.

Settings you can change

  • Bitrate: 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps, for the batch or per track.
  • Title, artist and album tags stored in the FLAC are copied to the MP3.
  • Optional artist, album and year fields overwrite those tags for every file, with the title taken from the file name.
  • Trim and loudness matching under Advanced.

FLAC and MP3 compared

FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) comes from the Xiph.Org Foundation. It compresses audio without losing anything: decode a FLAC and you get back exactly the samples that went in.

That is why CD rips and hi-res downloads are so often FLAC, many of them at 24-bit and 96 kHz or higher.

The price is size — a FLAC track is several times bigger than an MP3 of the same song — and many car stereos and older players don't play FLAC at all. MP3 discards detail the ear is least likely to miss.

MP3 tops out at 48 kHz, so hi-res tracks are resampled on the way. Keep the FLACs as your archive and treat the MP3s as copies for listening on the go.

Privacy and limits

Your music is not uploaded anywhere. Decoding and encoding happen in a WebAssembly worker inside the page, and the finished MP3s are saved straight from your browser's memory.

On a computer you can add up to 15 FLAC files at once, 200 MB each and 500 MB in total. Phones get 50 MB per file and 120 MB per batch, because a mobile tab has far less memory to work with.
