M4A to WAV

Turn .m4a files into uncompressed WAV for an audio editor, a transcription tool or a CD burner. M4A to WAV conversion runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded — handy for interviews and voice memos you'd rather keep private.

How it works

  1. 1.Add M4A files

Voice memos, iTunes tracks, any .m4a file — up to 15 at a time.

  2. 2.Choose the WAV format

Match source keeps the original sample rate at 16-bit. Presets give you CD (44.1 kHz), video (48 kHz) or 24-bit studio output.

  3. 3.Convert M4A to WAV

The AAC or Apple Lossless audio is decoded to plain PCM samples on your device.

  4. 4.Download

Each WAV keeps the name of its source file; a batch can be saved as one ZIP.

WAV output settings

  • Presets: Match source (16-bit), CD · 16-bit · 44.1 kHz, Video · 16-bit · 48 kHz, Studio · 24-bit · 48 kHz.
  • Force mono folds stereo down to a single channel — useful for speech recordings.
  • Start and stop times to keep only part of a recording.
  • Match loudness across files recorded at different levels.

From M4A to uncompressed audio

WAV stores raw PCM samples with no compression, which is why audio editors, DAWs and CD-burning software accept it without fuss.

The trade-off is size: 16-bit stereo at 44.1 kHz takes about 10 MB per minute, many times more than the M4A it came from.

Decoding to WAV doesn't bring back what AAC compression removed. What it gives you is a file that is easy to edit and loses nothing more when you save it again.

If the M4A uses Apple Lossless (ALAC), nothing was thrown away in the first place, so a 16-bit ALAC file converts to WAV with the audio intact.

Privacy and file limits

Conversion happens on your device with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg. Recordings are never uploaded, so you can use it for confidential interviews and meetings.

On a computer you can add up to 15 M4A files at once, 200 MB each and 500 MB in total. Phones get 50 MB per file and 120 MB per batch, because a mobile tab has far less memory to work with. Remember the WAV will be much larger than the M4A, so leave some free disk space.

For a smaller file instead, convert M4A to MP3. Videos go through MP4 to WAV, and MP3 to WAV does the same job for MP3s.
