MP4 to WAV
This page takes the audio track out of an .mp4 video and saves it as an uncompressed WAV file. MP4 to WAV runs in your browser: the video is read on your device, the picture is skipped, and nothing is uploaded.
How it works
1.Add MP4 files
Phone clips, screen recordings, exported edits — up to 200 MB per file on a computer.
2.Pick the WAV format
Match source, CD (44.1 kHz), video (48 kHz) or the 24-bit studio preset.
3.Convert MP4 to WAV
Only the audio stream is decoded. The video stream is ignored, not converted.
4.Download the WAV
One WAV per video, named after it, or a ZIP when you convert several.
WAV output settings
- Four presets: Match source (16-bit), CD · 16-bit · 44.1 kHz, Video · 16-bit · 48 kHz, Studio · 24-bit · 48 kHz.
- Start at / Stop at, to keep just one part of a long recording.
- Force mono for dialogue, and loudness matching across clips.
Getting audio out of a video
An MP4 file is a container, usually holding H.264 or H.265 video and an AAC audio track. This tool reads only the audio track: you get sound, not a new video. To change the video itself you need a video editor.
WAV is the format audio editors, DAWs and transcription tools take most readily, so it is a good starting point for cleaning up dialogue or reusing a soundtrack.
Expect a large file: about 10 MB per minute for 16-bit stereo at 44.1 kHz, and more at 48 kHz or 24-bit.
Android phones record video as .mp4. iPhones record .mov by default, and this page accepts only .mp4 files.
Privacy and size limits
The video never leaves your device. A WebAssembly build of FFmpeg reads it inside your browser, keeps the audio and throws the picture away.
Video files are big, and the whole file is loaded into the browser's memory, so the size limit matters more here than anywhere else. On a computer you can add up to 15 videos at once, 200 MB each and 500 MB in total. Phones get 50 MB per file and 120 MB per batch, because a mobile tab has far less memory to work with. Longer recordings need to be trimmed in a video editor first, or converted on a desktop browser.
